Development of a Floating Offshore Foundation for Third-Generation Wind Turbines (SBV-SOF)
Project Duration: 05/2016 - 12/2017
The official funding commitment for the development of an offshore wind turbine foundation made of a reinforced concrete composite elements was granted by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This funding, which amounts to almost 1 million euro for the affiliated partners GICON Group and the Department of Wind Energy Technology at the University of Rostock will provide the financial security required for the development and crucial trialling of a third-generation substructure for wind turbines generating 6 MW and above.
This was the background to the kick-off meeting for the new collaboration and research project held between GICON group and the University of Rostock in Stralsund on 26 April 2016. At this meeting, nine experienced engineers and three technical specialists discussed the technical aspects of the project and detailed the next stages of the project.
The scientific-technical project objective is the development of a novel structural framework made of heavy-duty and durable structural components suitable for light-weight construction methods. Another objective is the development of reinforced concrete or light-weight concrete components for substructure pre-tensioning. To implement the support structure it will be necessary to construct it of a composite material consisting of concrete and/or fibre concrete and steel or of fibre concrete by itself.
The GICON Group, will implement the basic design in compliance with the BSH construction standard for wind turbines. The creation of the aero-servo-hydro-elastic simulation, including the draft design, falls within the remit of the Chair of Wind Energy Technology at the University of Rostock.
This work will focus both on the development of the local offshore wind energy sector and the relevant supply industries within the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and on the establishment of a product for the international market that is “Made in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania”.
To achieve the stated objective and make efficient use of the available resources, the project will involve a very close collaboration between the University of Rostock and GICON. This will be just the latest project completed during the long-term collaboration between the University of Rostock and the GICON Group.

20.10.2017: Wind and Wave tests at the ECN in Nantes
During the period from the 16th to the 27th of October 2017 wind and wave tank tests are take place at the ECN in Nantes with the so-called GICON-TLP for wind turbines with a rated power of 6-8MW. The tests can be carried out within the scope of the MaRINET2 program by the Endowed Chair of Wind Energy Technology in cooperation with the company GICON. In addition to wind and wave tests, decay and white noise tests are carried out. The results are intended to calibrate simulation models.
05.-07.12.2018: ACMSM25 in Brisbane
The University of Rostock was represented by the Department of Wind Energy Technology at the ACMSM25 in Brisbane, Australia. In particular, Dr. Frank ADAM presented research topics in the field of floating substructures and discussed a joint cooperation in this area with the University of Queensland.
